This playground, located in southwestern Virginia, is built on a reclaimed surface mine and has a positive social impact for the community.
A social impact is described as being the effect of an activity on a community and ultimately the well-being of the individuals and families within that community.  Surface mining is many times perceived as only having negative social impacts; however, communities can benefit from surface mining activities and reclamation.  Within the following pages, a different perspective on surface mining and other human activities is presented to compare the real and lasting social impacts of all human disturbance activities.
